BER School
Project Saves 10% in Structural Steel
with Ritek Roof
Story added - 16th December 2009
A local company engineered
a 2,500m2 building using a conventional
Z purlin support system for a standard
COLORBOND® sheet roof.
They then provided an alternative price
adopting the Ritek roofing system. In
completing the re-design the result
was a substantial saving in the main
structural frame of up to 10% due to
the long spanning features of the Ritek
panels.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College,
a vibrant co-educational independent
school located on the Sunshine Coast,
has offered its students the most modern
educational facilities in the region
for over 20 years. The schools outstanding
sporting facilities include an indoor
sports centre which will provide students
with a state of the art multi-purpose
facility, all under an eco-innovative
Ritek Roof system.

The Ritek Roof system, Australia’s
longest unsupported roof span of up
to 11 metres, combines high strength
with sustainable design, and provides
excellent thermal properties. The roof
utilised a combination of Ritek’s
100mm and 125mm thickness panels and
tops off the 2,500m2 21st century multi-purpose
hall and covered sporting area, built
over the current Primary School Netball/Basketball
courts. The school was successful in
gaining a $2.5 million grant from the
Department of Education, Employment
and Workplace Relations, under the Primary
Schools for the 21st century component
of the “Building the Education
Revolution” (BER) Stimulus Program.
The Primary School multi-purpose hall/sports
area will turn the Primary School courts
into a multi-functional space.
Jeremy Hunter, Engineer/Director for
Superior Garages and Industrials, a
major Sunshine Coast Industrial shed
and garage manufacturer, supplier, and
builder originally engineered the building
using a conventional Z purlin support
system for a standard COLORBOND®
sheet roof. He was then requested to
give an alternative price adopting the
Ritek roofing system. In completing
the re-design he found there was a substantial
saving in the main structural frame
due to the long spanning features of
the Ritek panels. The many Z purlins
were replaced with much less roof support
members.
Jeremy designed the multi-purpose hall
in Ritek and was extremely pleased with
the result. The Ritek alternative was
then chosen by the school for its great
aesthetics, speed of installation and
low long term maintenance. Jeremy, who
had no previous experience with Ritek
roofing systems, confirmed an incredible
saving of up to 10% in the structural
steel frame, materials and overall labour
costs. This represented real value for
money as the Ritek roof also offered
a fully lined, low maintenance interior
finish, compared to the conventional
roof which showed exposed purlins, braces,
mesh and foil.
The customer’s brief to the architect
and engineer was to provide a multi-purpose
hall comprising of a roof, the design
of which reflected simplicity with neat
lines.
Work on the multi-purpose hall commenced
in the 2nd semester of this year and
is now awaiting landscaping ready to
open in the new school year. Jeremy
said, “I am happy with the progress
and timing of the project utilising
the Custom Roof Panel, with the assistance
provided by Ritek’s experienced
Project Management Team and with the
great overall aesthetics of the multi-purpose
hall - particularly the interior finish.
It was great to work with a light frame
which produced an overall quicker operation
and reduced the number of trades required
on site. I am more than happy to recommend
Ritek for large projects like this and
will work again with Ritek again in
the future!”
Ritek has engaged the services of an
independent Quantity Surveyor (QS) with
over 10 years experience in the building
construction industry, in order to prepare a
comparison cost document between conventional
roofing construction methods and the
Ritek Roof system.
